Setting Up Your First Payment Gateway: A Practical Guide

Every new VTUMax merchant asks some version of the same question in their first week: which payment gateway should I actually use? The honest answer is that most of them will work fine. The differences show up at the edges.

What actually differs between gateways

• Settlement speed, from instant to next business day
• Supported funding methods (cards, bank transfer, USSD)
• Chargeback and dispute handling process
• Payout fees on withdrawal, separate from transaction fees

If most of your customers fund via bank transfer rather than card, prioritize a gateway with strong transfer reconciliation, since that's where most funding failures happen in practice.

Our recommendation for first-time setup

Start with one gateway in test mode, run it for a week against real (small) transactions, then add a second gateway once you understand your own failure patterns. Don't try to configure all four on day one.
